Boyd Kenter Thomas & Parrish Secures $1.2 Million Verdict in Retaliation Claim

Type of claim: Race discrimination and retaliation in employment. Plaintiff Sal Madge, a Black male worked 17 years for Children’s Mercy Hospital. At the time of termination, he was the Senior Director of Patient Access. An investigation into alleged inappropriate sexual comments by Plaintiff towards multiple female subordinates resulted in Plaintiff’s termination June 29, 2023. Plaintiff was never notified of the investigation until he was terminated on the last day of the 29-day investigation. Plaintiff sued, claiming the investigation was racially biased, one-sided and flawed. Plaintiff claimed the accusers were white women who sought out people whom they thought supported the violations. Plaintiff also claimed the investigation ignored documents and refused to obtain documents that would support Plaintiff’s denials of the accusations.
Verdict: $1,261,500 for Plaintiff in discrimination claim ($161,500 past lost income; $100,000 non-economic loss and $1,000,000 punitive damages). For Defendant in retaliation claim.
