BKTP Partners with Popham Law Firm To Secure An Award For Lifetime Benefits For Widowed Kansas City Firefighter

BKTP and The Popham Law Firm client, Jean Wynn told her story to KMBC 9 amid the conclusion of a lawsuit connecting her husband's death to the gear he wore during 32 years of service with the Kansas City Fire Department.

More firefighters are stepping forward as cancers linked to PFAS—long-lasting “forever chemicals” found in turnout gear—become harder to ignore. Though departments are improving safety practices, PFAS-free gear is still out of reach.

This case, won by BKTP attorney John Boyd and Popham partner Scott Mach, is part of a growing recognition of the risks firefighters face long after the flames are out.

Now, under Missouri Workers’ Compensation law, Jean has been awarded lifetime benefits of nearly $1,000 per week—marking another important step in holding systems accountable for occupational cancer in firefighters.
